On August 8, the Annual Meeting of the Astronomical Society of China for 2017 took place in Urumqi city. This was the first time the Meeting was held in Xinjiang, and, with more than 800 participants from astronomical institutes and universities from all over China, it was also the largest Annual Meeting since 2002.
The Meeting consisted of three full-day sessions that have been sub-divided into several main topics, including invited lectures, high-level popular science reports and workshops, which represented an opportunity for scientists and students of astronomy to present and demonstrate research results and discuss topics of focus in recent astronomical research.
Xinjiang Astronomical Observatory (XAO) was the main organizer of the conference. XAO was founded 60 years ago with a history of exceptional development that filled with fruitful achievements and innovations in Astrophysics, astronomical technology and methods, space objects and debris, navigation, ground technological support and other astronomical research areas. XAO has initiated plans to accelerate the construction project of the 110-m aperture fully steerable radio telescope, and is active to build a world leading research platform for radio and optical astronomy.
During the conference, the Award Ceremony of the 6th Huang Shoushu Prize of Chinese Astronomical Society and the 2nd Huang Runqian Astrophysics Basic Research Prize were also held.
